Custom Engagement Rings 101

Congratulations! You are probably here because you feel that either your relationship with your significant other is serious enough to think about weddings, or you have already been asked and want the ability to customize your ring. Either way a custom ring can be a beautiful and special experience that will provide you with a one of a kind piece. Making a custom ring can be a tedious process if you are not aware of all the requirements that it entails. Below is my step by step process of how to be prepared for your unique journey.

Step 1: Make sure you understand the requirements before you buy.

A custom ring will be about three times more expensive than a regular engagement ring.
Your ring will also require a minimum of 6 months before you can even wear it.
There will be more demand on your part. Even if you sketched out your ring you will probably be required to collaborate with your jeweler several times before the ring is finished.
Jeweler’s and stone suppliers have a say in the final product. Yes, your custom ring may come from your imagination but do not be afraid to listen to what these experts have to say.
You will only have the final product. Unlike regular engagement rings you will be unable to try on the ring until it is completed. This can be difficult because sometimes there can be small discrepancies you did not think about.
Research. This blog post should not be the only source of information, as this is a big commitment we suggest you do your own research before investing a large amount of time, effort, and money.

Step 2: Think of potential qualities you want your ring to have.

It is always a good idea to visualize what you had in mind before going to a jeweler. If possible sketch it out or print pictures to show your idea ring.
Try on finished products. It is a good idea to try a ring like what you plan to have made. This way you can figure out ring size and weights that feel the most comfortable for you.
Find a jeweler you can trust. It is important not only for quality purposes that you find a jeweler you can trust. They are also professionals that can help guide you through the process or offer great advice on custom design and sometimes have specific styles you might like.

Step 3: ok you found where you want to order from, now what?

After finding a jeweler you can trust, it is time to figure out an action plan. Meet with your jeweler and explain what you are looking for. Don’t be afraid to listen to their ideas, they are experts after all.
Pick your setting for you stone and keep in mind what stone you want.
When picking a stone try and ask for a GIA report that comes from the Gemological Institute of America. This is a great way to help you understand the quality of you gems. If there is no report available look at the 4C’s: Clarity, Cut, Color, and Carats (weight). Try and pick a ring that has the best qualities of all four categories

step 4: Get protection.

Your ring is one of a kind with a value much more than what you paid. Take advantage of guarantees and any warranties the jeweler might have.
Get insurance for your ring. It already cost you more than a regular ring insurance is a small price to pay if you ever damage or lose your ring. It is far better than having to start all over again. Your ring has the potential to be a family heirloom so take care of it.
Get it in writing. Have your jeweler list all included features of your ring, such as purity, metals used, and designs. It is important should you ever decided to change something and it is easier to get it appraised when getting it insured.

Step 5: After the ring.

Besides picking your ring, this is the most important step. TAKING CARE OF YOUR RING!! This ring can last you lifetimes but it must be handled with care and taken care of. Do not assume that your ring will last forever on its own.
Show off your new ring on Facebook or Instagram and wait for the compliments to roll in. You should be proud of your creation as it reflects your individuality, so don’t be afraid to show it off a bit.
